With travel season comes the opportunity to eat out when needed. This is something that I was comfortable with after healing on the diet. I figured that when I was having no symptoms, I would be able to easily tell if a prepared food bothered me. This would help me avoid that restaurant or food in the future. I still recommend waiting to go to restaurants until feeling good and pretty much symptom-free.
But once you get to that point you should feel empowered to do your research and then enjoy eating SCD food out! It’s such a helpful thing to know where to go!
A Few Quick Tips on Eating Out
When I go to restaurants, I explain that I have "allergies" when I order my meal, so they know why the order is different and why getting the order right is very important. You can see the types of meals that might work and how to order. Check websites and call ahead to get more information about new restaurants and new menus, but try to call at a non-busy time!
What to Order at a Steak Place:
Steak, plain (not marinated), with plain legal steamed or grilled vegetables on the side (like broccoli, carrots, or zucchini).
What to Order at some Burger Places: (meat, no additives)
Hamburger with one or two patties with no spices and no bun, adding grilled onions, tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, and green peppers.
(All the burger places I go to such as Five Guys, In ‘n Out, and Freddie’s use additive free meat. Many places add flour or other starches or spice mixtures to their meat so be sure to do some research. At Five Guys and Freddie’s you can explain your order is for an allergy and they will cook it on a separate clean part of the grill.)
What to Order at Chain Restaurants on the Road:
Eggs 'n Meat or Bacon - cooked in oil or pure butter. This type of meal is often served all day. Fresh fruit, broiled additive-free chicken and fruit. Sometimes a Wedge salad or Cobb salad can work, using your own dressing or oil, salt & pepper.
What to Order at Fish Restaurant:
Grilled plain fish, with a side of plain grilled veggies.
(By the way, I have a specific detailed restaurant guide in my online course Fast-Track to SCD Success.)

My favorite breakfast: an egg, cheese lace, fried bananas, and black tea = YUM!
For quite a while, I’ve been enjoying this breakfast almost every day. It just is so delicious and it’s easy to make in one pan!
First, I melt butter on medium heat in a small pan.
Then I add a couple of slices of Colby Jack cheese and one egg, cooking both until the egg is done to my liking (medium-well), and then flipping the cheese until both sides are crispy.
Meanwhile, I slice one or two speckled bananas into a bowl. When both the cheese and the egg are done cooking, I transfer them to my plate and add a little more butter to the cheese fat and butter to the pan. I pour the banana slices into the pan and add a little honey on top of each slice, cooking for several minutes on each side until the slices are browned and caramelized. I pour the fried bananas into my bowl and allow to cool while I enjoy my cheese lace and egg with a cup of black tea. Then the “dessert” part at the end - my delicious fried bananas. Truly, I can’t get enough of this meal! Sometimes I make it for dinner on the weekends!
